Leucadia has always been home to world renowned shapers. That’s why we’re so stoked to be partnering with Bing Surfboards to bring you “Art of the Surfboard” at this year’s LeucadiART Walk and Bing's flagship store located at 802 N. Coast Hwy 101. Read on for all the details on this exciting interactive community tribute to our surf roots.
LIVE BOARD ART
Scott Bass of the Board Room will be on hand to guide attendees through the evolution of a surfboard, talking story and answering all your shaping related questions. Come learn the history of shaping and all the ins and outs of how a board goes from blank to wave-catching machine.
Marissa Quinn and Jeff Meyer, celebrated board artists from Leucadia will be live painting as part of the interactive exhibit. Come watch two boards come to life before your eyes! One board is shaped by Matt Calvani of Bing Surfboards and the other by Ryan Sakal of Aryse Surfboards, both Leucadia residents.
Both boards are up for raffle for $5 at Bing on the day of the event at $10 afterwards. Visit the Jeff Meyer board at Surfy Surfy 974 N. Coast Hwy 101 and the Marissa Quinn board at Bing 802 N. Coast Hwy 101 for the month of September.
COLLABORATIVE COMMUNITY ART PROJECT
Leucadians with photos, objects, swag, t-shirts, logos, stickers and tools from our board building roots are encouraged to bring their artifacts to the interactive photo booth at Bing Surfboards during LeucadiART Walk between 10 am and 5pm. We’ll photograph you with your favorite boards, Stonesteps contest shirts, see the tools of our board building past and hear about anything else that plays a part in our funky off-beat past.
Come browse the images of other artifacts to see what is unearthed. All the photos and stories will be compiled into a community art project! Come tell your stories of yore and encourage your friends and neighbors to do the same.
Leucadia local and world renowned artist, Andy Davis, will be live painting a surf-inspired mural that captures surfing’s artistic side on the south wall of Bing’s building! Click here to view Andy's iconic designs.
Mark Warren Jacques of MWJ Studio will be painting the California Music Studio piano! You've probably noticed his colorful work around town already, on the south facing wall at Be + Well and Gather — or maybe in Carlsbad at Campfire. Mark describes his colorful work as Positive Energy Output — and once you see the community piano at Coffee Coffee, you'll think agree. Until then, check out Mark's work at @mwjstudio on Instagram.
Each art location features a live art demo by one of the showing artists, make sure to check each one out as you make your way through the show! Live Artists from north to south are: The Wheel (live pottery demos), Teresa Thorman (live painting), Virginia Ann Holt (live silk painting), Danny DiCola and Angela Jackson, and Ruby Geisler with handprinted wall paper.
The Children’s Art Pavilion will host an array of art activities by The Oceanside Museum of Art, Not Nothing Projects, The Encinitas Friends of the Arts, Easter Seals Early Child Hood Development and the Encinitas School of Music!
Through a grant from the Third District County Board of Supervisors we have added three live dance performances, six live art demos, and a mural painting demo to the LeucadiART Walk this year to create a full spectrum of live visual arts for the community to enjoy!
In the barrel room at Solterra Winery and Kitchen, enjoy a modern dance from H2O Dance Company, with multiple performances between 11:30am - 1:30pm.
Do not miss Ballet Folklorico with two performances! Their first performance will be at 1pm at the Leucadia Post Office art location and their second performance will be at 2pm at the Leucadia Plant and Floral Art Location.
A new addition to the dance line-up this year is Sambaamerica Dance Collective, exhibiting Afro-Brazliian dance during multiple performances between 11:45am - 12:45pm at the Leucadia Plant & Floral Plaza art location and the Post Office Art Location.
